Tomoka MUSHIGA, Ph.D.
research interests: Hinduism, North India, Hindu rituals, pilgrimage, ancestral rites, Tristhali, religion and publishing, Hindi print culture, Gita Press, vrata, religious history
Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1987. After graduating from the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo, where I specialized in Religious Studies and the History of Religions, I continued my studies at the university’s Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, focusing on ancestor rituals and pilgrimage in Indian Hinduism. In 2014, I entered the doctoral program at the University of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, India. After conducting approximately two years of fieldwork in Gaya, Bihar, I received my PhD in 2019 for a dissertation on the religious history of Gaya and Hindu ancestor rituals.
After working as a JSPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow and as an Assistant Professor at the Hakubi Center for Advanced Research, Kyoto University, I joined the Graduate School of Humanities at Osaka University in April 2024. Alongside teaching Hindi and the religious cultures of India, I study the transformation of Hinduism in the modern period, with particular attention to Hindu practices such as rituals, festivals, and pilgrimage. More recently, I have also begun exploring the history of print culture in North India as an important avenue for understanding these transformations.
I developed an interest in Indian music while studying in India, and since 2018 I have studied North Indian classical vocal music (khayal) in the Gwalior gharana under the vocalist Dr. Meeta Pandit. I am also exploring ways to eventually develop music into one of my research themes.
The title of this website, Na Bhuto Na Bhavishyati (“There has never been, nor will there ever be, another like him”), is an expression traditionally used in praise of the legendary musician Tansen. I chose this title both as a tribute to Tansen and Indian music, and to express my hope that something new may emerge from bringing together the study of religion and the practice of music.
